Walking into the Dolphin, you could be forgiven for thinking that you'd stumbled into one of the many second-hand furniture or faux antique stores that permeate Sydenham. Panelled walls, board floors and the sort of dining furniture our parents owned back in the '60s predominate. But this is gentrification 21st Century Sydenham style and, to be fair, it works. The atmosphere is relaxed, almost restaurant style. The Dolphin is assuredly family friendly, happily providing highchairs for its youngest guests while presenting their mums and dads with a sophisticated bar menu, a decent wine selection and three well kept bitters, plus the usual in lagers and spirits. Don't ask for a bud, however, if you're expecting the American version. They even serve a nice cup of coffee. Everything here is well presented but it isn't cheap. Owned by the same people behind the Dartmouth Arms in nearby Forest Hill, it's a nice place for a relaxed and comfortable drink, not the place to go for a pint-after-pint session.

Yes, it's a gastropub, but still one you can have a pint in, and it's probably worth a 3 pint rating now as probably the most welcoming pub in Syd High St. Although that's an easy title to get.
