There are some aspects of this very good, traditional local that edge it ahead of the nearby Flower Pot in our estimation - Cask Marque beers, including the local Brentwood Brewing company's Gold, maintained by a friendly and knowledgeable landlord not the least of them. On our last visit, he actually drew a pint before pouring ours to make sure we didn't get what had been lying in the pipes since the previous night, which was a nice touch. There's lots of room to spread out, even with a stage in the middle and the pool table taking up a good chunk of the back room (they even have their own pool team, judging from the collection of trophies behind the bar). With regular music nights and lots of sport on the tellies, there's lots going on to take your pick from. The only down side we found was the reaction of the locals - while not quite the Slaughtered Lamb, it can be a bit off-putting initially. They soon ignored us and carried on with their drinking.

How to find the The Dukes Head pub

The pub is just opposite Wood Street railway station. You can catch the overground from Liverpool Street or Walthamstow Central (which is the closest you're going to get to this one by tube). Turn right out of the station and head up the road. The pub is ahead on the left, past the Flower Pot. There are buses, but check Transport for London for best way to get there.
