If you're unfamiliar with the area, the Eagle Ale House is pleasing discovery, located between Wandsworth Common and Clapham Junction - a local pub with an independent spirit to it. The beers are great, with regular guest ales on offer at the pumps. With a stack of board games available, and a few tables inbuilt with chess and backgammon tops, the place is ideal for an afternoon of slothful drinking. Saying that, the empty champagne bottles on the bookshelves suggest it's pretty handy for a night of excess too - maybe in the marquee you can hire out the back. Said marquee manages to pack in some leather sofas and a giant screen (a great space, particularly if you're a smoker). Though located very much in the heart of the Nappy Valley, this is the sort of pub parents go to escape the rigours of parenthood, not a place where they take the pram along with them. It's also a rugby pub and can get very busy when there's a big match on. The Eagle may take a while to track down, but it's well worth the walk - and it also gives you a chance to work up a thirst.

A great pub - the only 'real pub' left in the area - except the Nightingale. Great beer, two fires, no food (except pickled eggs - and barbecues on Ale Festival days, which are superbly organised events), blokes who run the place are good lads, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the business and 'art' of running a good pub with good beer. Packed for big rugby and football matches, can be a bit quiet on a February Tuesday - which is a shame cos it deserves to be busy all the time.

There have been loads of changes to the Eagle since this review. There's even more beer than ever before, with Sharp's Doom Bar being the firm regular's favourite amongst the unbelievable number of beers that frequent the 7 different real ale pumps.

There is now even a traditional cider pump too.

On Wednesday nights the gaffers freshly prepare a mean curry upstairs, and on Sunday nights the pub quiz is by the best I've been to in the area - taste rounds, dancing, - the landlord even presented the quiz dressed up as Boris Johnson a couple of weeks ago.

I'm looking forward to their beer festival that they've got in August too. Did I mention this place rocks?
