The Elgin, Holland Park
This is miles from the old Firkin pub it used to be. Oh, the traditional interior's not changed that much, and it's still a commanding monolith on the corner of Ladbroke Grove, but it's a vastly different experience. Another acquisition by Geronimo Inns, they've had their way with it and made it something more approaching a destination, as opposed to a place to meet and go somewhere else. Concentrating on cocktails, decent food and chill out music without abandoning very good beer and friendly service is serving them well - the customers we observed appeared to be settled in, there's no doubt about that. They're obviously aiming a bit more upmarket, with a horse's head from the Elgin marbles on the signs outside. It no longer has TVs everywhere, and the fruit machines and ATM are a thing of the past. There's a separate dining area in the back bar and regular DJ sets combine with the loungey interior to set the scene for a cool and trendy bar that happens to be in a traditional pub. But it works.

What a shambles! As this seeemd to be the only pub in the area with Sky Sports and showing the autumn internationals was initially thrilled to find this place had been acquired by the Geronimo pub group. A regular at the Prince Albert during the 6-nations' campaign....get in! Apart from TV above door so was difficult to position oneself, cash only at the bar, half the beers were not on and surly bar staff who seemed unaware of any first-come, first-served protocol. That said, my pints of Cornish Coaster slipped down a treat..once I was eventually served!
