Dear diary, this is no longer named Samuel Pepys but has been relaunched as The Field, part of the Shannon Pubs chain. There has been a refit along with the renaming, which manages to create the feel of three distinct sections despite the limitations on space. The front, and the area along the bar, accommodate the hoard of afterwork drinkers, while the raised area to the rear and more loungey middle section provide something more comfortable for a longer stay. There is space for six ales, with four options available on our last visit, and plenty of lager choices. Food is reasonably priced and available all day, including an extensive range of burgers, and with several screens to watch sports you've got a good all-rounder here, handily placed for Green Park. We're also glad the oak panels at the rear survived the transformation.

Take the Piccadilly north side exit from Green Park. The park should be opposite you. Turn right and walk about five minutes down Piccadilly toward Hyde Park. Clarges Street is on your right.
