The Fox is a refreshingly unpretentious pub on the north-eastern outskirts of the City. A pub of two halves: downstairs is plain and simple - a central bar, wooden tables and chairs, plain walls, blackboards with menus and functional lighting. There's no ironic, tired 70's lounge furniture, no frou-frou lighting, no butcher's block tables, just space to sit drink, chat and eat. Upstairs there's a much posher dining room, which is often hired out - so check it's available if you're planning to eat here - and a roof terrace. The drink and food is of a good standard - Harvey's Best and Pedigree on the hand pumps, Addlestone's cider and decent lagers on tap, a reasonable wine list and some interesting bar food (black pudding hash, for instance). Prices are about what you'd expect for these parts, a little higher than average, but that's to be expected and the service is fast and friendly. The Fox is often quiet, apart from when there's an office do going on, so if you're looking for a spot to have a chat with a bunch of friends accompanied by good quality drink and food, the Fox is a good bet in these parts

skaffman must run a rival pub as his/her comments are absurd.

The Fox has wooden floors, wooden tables and wooden chairs, all very clean and pleasant. If you want faux victorian, go to a Weatherspoon. (Although it's true that the central bar is a bit big.) I've been frequenting the Fox for two years, and it's been staffed by the same bunch of competent canadians for the whole time, no staff turnover worth mentioning. The food isn't the cheapest around, but it's good value for what you get and much more interesting than sandwiches and pies. Clientelle are a good mix of city insurers and Hoxton IT / advertising types all enjoying the food, ale, atmosphere, and the hope that skaffman won't be coming back.
