The Gatehouse, Highgate
FancyaPint?'s review...
On first impressions, this one appears to be that rare beast: the above-average Wetherspoon. The olde worlde exterior, the longevity of this as a pub site and the added attraction of a theatre upstairs: surely there's a little more to this one than the usual Wetherspoon bank conversion? Well, almost. It maybe housed in a pretty building and have a rare-to-see Wetherspoon beer garden, this one can't escape the usual JDW atmosphere vacuum. And no amount of research into local Highgate history, written up on every available wall space, can give the pub the historical feel so desperately desires. Sure, it serves a local need and its not a one pinter, but if you're off to see a play at the theatre here, we'd suggest trying a drink elsewhere first.

How to find the The Gatehouse pub
Rather sneakily, Highgate tube is a fair walk from Highgate Village. It should take about 15 mins to get from one to the other. Leave Highgate tube by the 'car park' exit so you're on the Archway Road. Cross the road and walk up Jacksons Lane till it meets Southwood Lane. Keep on Southwood Lane until you reach Highgate High Street. Turn right and you'll see the pub at the crossroads. Alternatively walk (or catch the bus) up Highgate Hill from Archway. At the top of the hill, the pub is on the mini-roundabout.
