We seem to remember this being one of the first 'conversions' in Croydon, changing use from a furniture store to a pub, and setting in chain the bar-culture that now pervades the centre of the town. Quite cavernous inside the George supports two bars, front and rear, serving an odd mix of customers. Certainly popular in the daytime with shoppers dropping in for a drink and bite of lunch, in the evenings it gets busy with shop and office workers on their way home. The front bar seems always to have a few folk on 'beer-break' from the nearby betting shops and. whatever the weather, there always seem to be a small and huddled bunch of smokers outside. If you're looking for sophistication and elan, you won't find it here, just a pretty honest reflection of downtown Croydon. That said, the beer choice is always good and it's always in fair nick. The food and prices charged reflect the value we've all come to expect from the Wetherspoon's chain. If it's busy, the service can be difficult.
