On the edge of Putney Heath, this fairly traditional pub has been here since around 1700 and is reputed to stand near the spot of a famous duelling spot on the Heath and was often a refuge for the contestants after the duel. It was also a haven for highwaymen and the notorious Dick Turpin was rumoured to have hidden his guns in one of the upstairs rooms. It's been done up since then, probably a few times, but at least it hasn't been stripped out and turned into one of Young's gastrocities. The inside is still fairly traditional and up-to-date at the same time, with several rooms to choose from and open fires in the two largest ones. With Young's beers and guest beers like Tribute, real ale aficionados are covered and there's plenty of other options too. There's more than one spot for al fresco drinking, one at the front with a view of the bus park across the road and an edge of the heath; the garden at the back of the pub is much larger, and has been modernised with a large steel sculpture in the middle and a rather nice panoramic photo of the two bridges at Putney on the back wall. We suspect the garden gets pretty busy in nice weather with kids and families enjoying the sunshine - and there's giant chess, Jenga and Connect 4 to keep them busy as well as barbecues in the summer. With friendly staff, a decent and not too expensive menu, this is an ideal place to go and if you can manage it when the weather's fine and the garden's quiet, it's practically perfect.

How to find the The Green Man pub

From either East Putney tube or Putney BR station, head to Putney High Street and head up Putney hill. The pub is right on the corner, just before the Heath starts. No more than a 15 minute walk, or a few minutes if you get a bus (most of which handily stop outside the pub).
