Many pubs in the Spitalfields area are reinventing themselves as "Bohemian" bars with crappy furniture, louder than usual music, candles, foreign sounding menus, Smirnoff Ice and all that. Thankfully, this pub has stuck to its Guns and presents itself as that increasingly hard to find venue - the traditional boozer. It's a regulars' pub, with blokes (mostly) from the offices nearby being ably catered for with decent beer - Broadside, Bombardier, IPA and Deuchars on the hand pumps - food and service with the occasional sporting event on the telly. The upstairs restaurant seems to do a roaring trade at lunchtimes - and the Masons used to meet here, which makes the place all the more interesting.

After eating at an excellent Tapas bar nearby my husband suggested that we have a drink in The Gun before catching the train home. The staff looked totally disinterested and when 1 girl came over I asked for a diet coke and my husband ordered a pint. She walked away and proceeded to fill a glass with ice. I called to her and politely said "excuse me, no ice thank you". She rolled her eyes and said something to her collegue, who then stared straight at me and muttered something back to her. When she plonked the glass and coke bottle down along with the pint, I asked her if there was a problem with me having no ice. She said "No". She then grabbed the £10 note from my husbands hand. She almost threw the change at him. I couldn't believe what I'd just witnessed.
Whilst it was an effort for them to smile and serve customers they didn't seem to have any problem pouring wine and spirits for themselves !
I had intended to look up the Pub's telephone number and call the manager this morning. However, when I read some of the comments left by previous disgruntled customers, I realised that this would be futile. I decided the best thing would be to add my experience to hopefully warn off other potential customers.
It's hardly surprising that the staff get away with their ignorant behaviour, when the Manager treats complaints so rudely himself.
I would never set foot in the place again.
In total contrast, we went to a Wetherspoons pub next to Liverpool Street Station. There, we were served by a very nice, polite young man. Although he did not know what a Cinzano was he smiled and asked a collegue. There were people behind the bar who wanted to look after customers and were not showing distain towards them !!
I think it's very sad that a once traditional pub is being so mis-managed.
Tourists to London can still find good Old Fashioned pubs where they'll be treated politely. Just AVOID The Gun.

Never done a pub review before: felt the need here. Went in around 3.00 p.m. on 23rd July 2011 after a long walk. The three female bar staff were offish, rude, difficult and not interested - I later sat and observed this applied not just to me but to all customers. They weren't that busy either. I once asked for a Baileys and ice. All three girls, like drama queens, rolled eyes in their heads (I guess they come from the same East European country); I got, a Baileys with Famous Grouse. When I politely and good-naturedly pointed out the mistake they did me a big, big condescending favour of replacing the drink. OK, they did get my beer orders right in the hour my wife and friends were in the pub. But, yuk. Blobby, inked-up, surly girls, with pitiful English ... and desperately offish. No way would I go there again 'specially after just seeing my opinion echoed in very old customer reviews. BTW, I'm white, British, middle aged, native English speaker, worked extensively abroad ... and bar staffed myself in pubs in my younger years ... I've never complained about bar staff service before. These girls? If they don't like their jobs, go elsewhere: Give the owner a break because it's otherwise a nice, tastefully decorated pub, good selection of beers and a good feel.

Had the misfortune to walk into this awful pub on a trip to London one Saturday evening with my family. What a dump. The barstaff were thoroughly rude and could not care less if they served you or not. (huffing and puffing when ordering a drink). They made rude comments to your face when we ordered food such as 'Thats not good for you' and when ordering ONE jacket pototo was asked 'what ANOTHER one?' After spending time choosing our meals from the selection shown on the blackboard, the food started to arrive,at which point the barmaid arrogantly announced the lamb stew I had ordered was all gone. When I complained and asked why couldn't she have told us that when we ordered, I was ignored and treated with contempt - (how dare I walk into a pub and order a drink and food!!) When another member of the group went to place their food order they were told that 'Monica' had gone on her break and the kitchen was closed!!

I have, quite frankly, never had such poor customer service anywhere in my life, and am embarrassed to think that this is a London pub where overseas tourists could visit.

According to the members of my family who did manage to get a meal served to them, the food was just about edible.

Avoid this pub - there are others in the vicinity.

Had much the same experience. Tried to have a couple of quiet drinks after work with some friends. After a poor initial experience with the bargirl ('I'm really bored, don't bother me' expression) I tried to return a pint that had lipstick around the edge. I was told loudly by the owner that I was just being a pain in the ar*e and embarassed in front of other customers.

I'm a bloke so I suggest that the lipstick mark wasn't mine!! I'm certainly not going back. To compound it, the same bargirl gave me a smug look as if to say, "Well? What can you do about it?"
