The Hemingway, Hackney
FancyaPint?'s review...
This pub sign here has been changed yet again and it now sports a painting of a raging bull and a new name - the Hemingway. After more identity changes than most pubs we know (we make it five in about as many years) has this pub finally got the management and style it deserves? Only time will tell, but initial impressions are encouraging. The change, in line with what else happening in this area, is definitely upmarket and there's a new emphasis on food. There's a small kitchen area in the front bar where, you can watch the chef prepare your somewhat pricey food. The menu is pretty ambitious, with some nice looking (we haven't eaten here yet) starters and gastro main courses - including Beef Wellington for two at £38, a hefty price for food in a pub. There's also a Sunday roast. For those who have a thirst to slake, there are a couple of ales on hand pumps, a selection of lagers, Guinness and Aspall's cider on tap, a decent range of wines and a rather impressive array of spirits. The interior has been brought up to date and is far more welcoming and classier, with some interesting touches around the bar. There's a terrace around the front and side for those occasional warm days, plenty of games to play if you get bored and TV for sporting events. The clientele has changed too - predominately younger locals nowadays and there's more of them, so there's a buzzier atmosphere. Previously, the atmosphere was often deathly. With it's late licence (midnight during the week and 1:00am Friday and Saturday) and new, more forward looking management, we think the Hemingway will do pretty well round here.
