The Herne is a handsome pub with some striking features such as its elegant original windows, furniture and wood-panelled interior. It's been renovated by the people behind the Palmerston in Lordship Lane and shares many similarities. Despite the presence of some excellent draught ales (such as Black Sheep and Deuchars IPA), you feel that the emphasis is very much on dining rather than drinking. The rather pricey menu is, like the pub itself, aimed squarely at affluent visitors. The Herne is also extraordinarily child-friendly: there's a side room inside with a low table and chairs for play, whilst the vast rear landscaped beer garden, shaped like something from this venerable computer game, doubles as outdoor drinking area and kids playground. The Herne is a thoroughly modern pub, not to all tastes or wallets, typical of many renovations moving upmarket to cater for moneyed locals.
