It's not the greatest pub in the Young's franchise, but the Hope is your best bet in Norwood. It's close to the train station and would be a handy place to meet people. The bright, comfortable interior is decorated with mirrors and framed pictures, whilst the usual Young's beers should quench your thirst. However, a recent (and much-needed) refurbishment has smartened the pubs interior up a bit, and they've just renovated the garden with decking, shelter and heated lamps. It has gone from a concrete yard to something extremely impressive - by far the best we have seen since the smoking ban.

The Hope is my local and it's a proper local - good beer, loyal regulars and friendly staff who are pulling your pint the moment you walk through the door.

Yes, the latest refurbishment was an improvement. Pity about the previous one (2003) which removed a lot of the clutter that made it feel homely.

Incidentally, the directions from West Norwood station are bit convoluted. Simply walk down Hannen Road (or Cotswold Street if the gate on the "up" platform is open) and you're there.
