The Lion & Unicorn, Kentish Town
FancyaPint?'s review...
Such an imposing pub on a back street in Kentish Town couldn't remain a rough boozer much longer. Of course, once upon a time it would've simply been a 'normal pub', but the intervening years have seen almost every pub in Kentish Town move distinctly upmarket while the stragglers get worse. So now after a significant refurb the Lion and Unicorn has relaunched as a comfy gastropub. This was one of the final pubs opened by the Geronimo Inns group, before their sale to Young's. Unsurprisingly, they've done a good job. It was certainly true that the old incarnation of this pub was getting tired - not cosy or traditional, just gloomy. Old regulars are apparently bemoaning the removal of the pool tables which have been replaced by an eating area which takes up over half the space. We like it here though. The decor and furnishings are welcoming and there are enough quirky ideas to keep it interesting. The staff are cheery and the clientele a good natured mix. Drinks-wise, of the five ale pumps three were on, with wares coming from Sharps, Meantime and (surprise surprise)Young's. While purists may describe them as slightly too cold, they were in tip-top condition. Just one request: get a glass cover for your excellent scotch eggs displayed on the bar - no-one wants them being sneezed over. Overall, we'll certainly be back and makes a nice place for a pre theatre drink. In one way though, we rather lament the fact it is getting increasingly difficult to get a game of pool in north London boozers.
