A stone's throw from a number of civil service departments, but most notably Defra, this is an acceptable enough watering hole for the politicos of the area. Downstairs was refurbished a while ago in 'London Transport' style (i.e.: they've removed a fair few seats to facilitate more standing customers), which takes away some of the charm it once had. Virtually every night finds it very busy here, with talk of environmental directives, emission targets and early retirement not too far from earshot, with the crowds only thinning out by 9pm or so. There's a fair range of ales, but all too often they run out of the majority by mid evening, giving us Hobson's_choice more than once, while a quiet upstairs retreat is often booked by leaving parties. Overall, its perfectly fine here, but this isn't one to make a beeline for unless you work in the immediate area.

Work not too far from this and have seen the new management sort the food and the ales over the past year. Food is good and reasonable and ales are well kept and ever changing. The Timothy Taylor Landlord is glorious and their recent Black Horse Porter superb. Yes it's busy but always with people who know how to behave.

I would give this a slightly better review than the fancyapint site gives. It had four guest ales on tap when I was there on Monday, 1st June 2009, one of which was a satisfying "golden" Woodforde’s Sundew (ABV 4.1%):
