The Maxwell Hotel, Orpington
FancyaPint?'s review...
Orpington suffers from some execrable pubs. Perversely, one of the few decent ones is to be found in what is traditionally the domain of the downright awful boozer, yards from the train station (note that this is a kilometre from the small concentration of other pubs on the High Street). This former coaching inn has seen a recent return to good ale and a more sedate customer, not to mention the reappearance of memorabilia such as the lovingly-collected football club coffee mugs which hang from the ceiling, or the original framed advertisement of yesteryear for the local Biggin Hill air show. The Maxwell had a rather loutish clientele a couple of years back, but while still fairly rough and ready, the current punters are a pretty decent lot. The pub has a vaguely old-fashioned look, without being overly scruffy (regrettably, the same may not be said of the gents' toilets, which look the same as they did when we cut our drinking teeth in the very same pub). Overall, a decent-enough pub, worth visiting not only when you have just missed the train to Charing Cross.
