The Monarch, Camden
FancyaPint?'s review...
The Monarch has finally managed to throw off the last vestiges of its former life as a Wetherspoons. It's no longer family friendly, and there are no real ales left on tap (you might get some expensive ones in bottles if you're lucky). The interior rather puts us in mind of Miss Havisham's house from Great Expectations. The main bar at the front is dimly lit, the furniture - sofas and leather chairs & stools - are slightly posh, functional and not yet too worn, and the upstairs balcony area, leading to the toilets, is dark and musty. There is a small beer garden out the back, and a low stage at the front, which are the two redeeming features of this pub - it often has live music or even talks and debates, so bringing a bit of culture to the table. Otherwise though, unremarkable.
