The Nelson's Head, Shoreditch
FancyaPint?'s review...
We sometimes have a twinge of sadness when an old back street local gets refurbished, as it often involves dining areas and stripped floorboards. If they end up like this, though, we're not going to complain. A short walk from the fashionable enclave of Columbia Road, the Nelson's Head held out as a geezer's pub until a couple of years back, but the interior left something to be desired. Now, however, it's transformed. Painted in a rich, dark blue and complete with a proper swirly pub carpet, it feels warm and inviting. Sideboards and window ledges are festooned with objet d'art and treen: glass bowls, china pots, cat figurines and the like. Many of the chairs seem to have come from an old cinema and the walls are covered with paintings or mirrors - all up for sale and mostly already sold. Indeed, this idea is further explored with the pub's regular jumble sales. This interesting eccentricity comes at a small price, in that you'll have to tolerate the occasional finger-clicking Hoxtonite, but mostly there's a genuine mix of people and an easy-going atmosphere. There's one ale on tap (usually a well kept Courage Best), but we often opt for Courage Light Ale when visiting; somehow it seems appropriate.

The barman was initially friendly but then took forever to serve me what he himself defined as "the worst half pint of Guinness he ever poured". In between the slow pours he was munching "spicy faggots"(a self defined snack of some kind)..and chatting to some weirdo.
Worst of all.. in the 10 minutes I spent drinking there.. how many time did I hear his fav catchphrase: "Would you like a big top?" Far too many.
(And of course he finishes the joke saying that there are no "Tops" around! hahaha)

The best pub in the area, hands down. Friendly staff, lovely interior (love the cinema style seats), decent prices, almost want to keep it a secret it's so good!

How to find the The Nelson's Head pub
In the middle of the flower Market on Columbia Road, it's equally far from Cambridge Heath station and both the Bethnal Green stations, plus the various tube stations. Nonetheless, from Cambridge Heath, walk along Hackney Road and after 10 minutes or so Horatio Street will be on your right. The pub is a short way down there.
