The Old Brewery is a microbrewery, bar and cafe linked to the new Discover Greenwich visitor centre on the site of the Old Royal Naval College. The brewery and pub have been established by the local and expanding Meantime Brewery Company (the firm behind the Greenwich Union on Royal Hill). There's a history of brewing on the site,with retired sailors at the Royal Naval Hospital received three pints (of "small" beer) a day from its on-site brewery - Meantime's new "Hospital Porter" (8% ABV) is aptly named and an excellent smooth brew. People familiar with the Union will have a good idea what to expect here: a variety of excellent draught Germanic and Belgian-inspired beers, as well as plenty of bottled beers from around the world. The main hall is dominated by eight handsome copper-clad vats and a novel light fitting made up of hundreds of beer bottles. Food is a key part of the offer too, from cafe sandwiches to a bar menu and sophisticated restaurant menu (see their web site for details) - all of excellent quality and very reasonably priced. In our rather extensive experience, pubs in tourist areas tend to pander to the lowest common denominator - you know the pubs we mean - but, thankfully, the Old Brewery is exactly the opposite. It's a place you'd be happy to travel to without the benefit of historic surroundings, such is the quality of the drink, food and ambience and it's popular too. The Old Brewery proves you don't have to dumb-down to create a thriving business - other pubs should take note.
