We'd overlooked this pub as, until about a year ago, it was not a particularly enticing place and when we were in these parts, we were usually on the way somewhere else. That was until today, when we decided that the Pear Tree looked a much better place than we recalled and we really ought to check it out - and we were jolly pleased we did. The new owners have turned this place around, it's a relaxed, unpretentious place, with a rather large central bar and a small room off to the back. There are a couple of well-kept real ales on the hand pumps - the ubiquitous Landlord and Pride - accompanied by typical lagers and a decent wine list. There's a strong emphasis on food, with a typical modern gastro menu (and traditional Sunday roast), but not to the detriment of those who want to drink and socialise. The service is friendly and efficient and to add to the jolly atmosphere there are board games, darts and a regular quiz. The Pear Tree is a pretty good all rounder, with something for everyone and it's a place to relax. In these parts, the Pear Tree a welcome respite from the manic freneticism of Fulham Palace Road and Hammersmith pub circuit.

Excited by the idea of finding a new pub fairly near to Hammersmith, we undertook a long and slow bus ride this Wednesday lunchtime. What a waste of time. The Pear Tree is one the ever increasing band of London pubs that is not open at lunchtime. No, let me be more precise, it was not open this lunchtime - I cannot vouch for other days. How can this be possible for a pub with an emphasis on food? Does nobody eat lunch anymore?

Dear Fancyapint reviewers, I have said it before but why can you not include opening times in ALL your reviews. I would venture to suggest that the opening hours are rather more important than the position of the bar, or the availability of a pool table.
