Formerly a cosy Hall and Woodhouse pub, this one's had a change of owners and a complete makeover. It's a pleasant place and along the lines of what we're starting to accept as modern 21st century pubs - and still all shiny and new. Part of the group including the Only Running Footman in Mayfair and the House in Islington, it leans heavily towards the gastro end and has a separate restaurant to prove it. A drink is still possible without eating - although half the tables in the pub area downstairs were set for eating in the middle of he afternoon. As in its previous incarnation, the pub's not a huge place, but the changes they've made to the interior have opened it out nicely. The friendly staff and decent beer make it a good place for an afternoon sitting with a pint, reading the paper. We're not sure what it's like at busier rimes, but the prognosis is good. We'll be back to see what it's like at peak times - and with a 'pie of the day', we might have to eat as well!

Must say, I had a not so great time at The Portman when it first opened its doors so I was sceptical to go back. I am happy to say that I now recommend The Portman for its food, drink and atmosphere- the change in staff has made a huge difference and I will keep going back as long as it stays this good.

They have recently added Brooklyn beer to their drinks list so the husband is happy too!

Had lunch with some colleagues here, every single one of us ordered fish and chips and every single one of us loved them! Proper homemade msuhy peas were bang on too - definitely go back. Looks like they've got a posh bit upstairs too

Overview

This much-loved pub, restaurant and private event space houses elegant, yet unpretentious surroundings, complete with a truly British menu featuring home-grown produce direct from the farmers. Guests can slide up to the long mahogany bar or comfy booth seating and enjoy traditional Blighty breakfasts or old-style pub menu favourites later on. The restaurant is a bit more luxurious, serving stylish items like Rillette of Rabbit & Duck, Spiced Pear Chutney & Toasted Granary Bread against a backdrop of velvet chairs and plush carpeting. For those who feel that the wine bar set have lost sight of what made Britain great, The Only Running Footman is definitely for you.
