Many moons ago, this place was the Artichoke. And a perfectly decent, old-fashioned boozer it was, with an alternative, studenty crowd. Then it became the Blacksmith's and took a nosedive, and after a period of closure, it has recently reopened as "The Priory Tavern & Refectory". And guess what? Despite the gastronomically aspirational name, it's even worse than before (though it retains a solitary "pint" for the reasonable choice of ale) - and there was a distinct lack of food on offer. At least in the Blacksmith's you could nurse a pint and read the paper in peace. Now, you have the local intelligentsia pontificating at the bar, taking it in turns to "go out for a faaag". And the beer garden is so unkempt and beaten up, they smoke on the street. It's all a bit of a shame, because the refit has been tidily done, albeit in a rather identikit way. They've retained the original fireplace and repainted the ceilings, but given the period nature of the building, not to mention some of the other dives nearby, this place could - and should - be so much better.

No longer a pub - it's now a restaurant. No great loss there then! The greek cuisine is supposed to be quite good as well.
