Given the size of the population round here and its ancient history, you'd expect Blackheath to contain a sizeable number of pubs. It seems ideally suited for them. The heath is a large open space (drawing summertime crowds), there's a captive audience (transport isn't exactly easy here) and it's a pretty wealthy area. You'd think the streets would be lined with pubs two-deep. But, sadly, that's not the case, there are only a handful of pubs in the village - we can think of tiny hamlets that have a lot more - and what pubs there are, are a bit of motley bunch - competition isn't exactly cut-throat. However, we are happy to say the the Railway doesn't rely on its captive market to make a living, but makes a big effort to look after its customers and bring even more in. There's a big range of drink on offer and it's all pretty good stuff - a large selection of Cask Marque Ales on the hand pumps a pretty good wine list, with the opportunity to taste the cheaply on Tuesdays and a good range off Continental beers, lagers and spirits. The food is OK - modern British pub - and the interior spacious and bang up-to-date. There's a garden out the back - which is apparently non-smoking - and there's also a roof terrace - presumably to put the smokers up with the chimneys. The Railway has a late licence all week and, now there's security on the doors at the weekend, it gets nowhere near as rowdy as it once did. We've heard one or two gripes about the occasionally self-absorbed staff, but we've not experienced that recently. We'd say that the Railway is one of the pubs of choice in these parts.
