The Ranelagh, Bounds Green
FancyaPint?'s review...
After being a candidate for a Mitchell's & Butlers redo some while ago, not many people remember the fag-tastic shabbiness of old and fewer miss it. Looking similar (but never identical) to every other M&B refit, a mixture of styles adorn the interior: lots of brown paint, 1940s utility sideboards and kitschy lampshades, all studiously mismatched. Having eschewed large screen sport for louche lounging may have displeased the old Ranelagh's regulars, but the place is now nicely filled with a mixture of 20 and 30 somethings who live nearby due to the 'reasonable' rental prices. On a few occasions now we've enjoyed good beer and good food on a relaxed weekend afternoon and there is enough life on a Friday night to make it worth stopping there for the evening. Service can be somewhat mixed however; previous visits have encountered various forms of rudeness, from sarcasm to being ignored, but thankfully our most recent visit found the staff engaging and friendly.
