Claiming to be "the only London pub in two halves", the Ship & Shovell is a good pub in an area short of them. Its pleasant red and black facade, adorned with street lanterns, presents a mirror image across the narrow passageway that passes under Charing Cross station. Each half of the pub has its own bar serving an interesting range of draughts including Badger Best and IPA, Tanglefoot, Sussex, JB Pilsner and Stinger. Due to its proximity to the railway and tube stations, the pub tends to be busy in the evenings but it's also possible to enjoy a standing drink outside in the relatively sheltered passageway. Either way, no matter how crowded it gets, this pub always has a good atmosphere.

Don't get put offf if you see there's a massive crowd of punters outside this place - try the upstairs room in the 'smaller half' - it's not noticed by many. The beers and service here are consistently good.
