The Ship, Lambeth
FancyaPint?'s review...
The Ship is a handsome Victorian pub located in a bit of a no-man's land between Lambeth, Kennington and Elephant and Castle. Unless you lived around here, you probably wouldn't entertain the idea of a visit to the area and, in doing so, you'd be missing a top local. The pub sits on the busy Kennington Road, at the edge of a rather nice Victorian Square, that's just hidden away from view, from whence it mostly draws its clientele. It's a friendly place, the staff are welcoming and everyone seems to know everyone else. There's a constant stream of people in and out of the place, even on a miserable Monday evening - creating a lively, but relaxed atmosphere. It's had a makeover since our last visit, with a pizza menu and upmarket snacks (shame as we liked the toasties). There's also been an improvement on the beer front, with lots of guest beers on the taps - the Woodforde's Wherry went down a treat. They were also having a mini beer fest at the time, with more than 20 ales on the taps. Very nice. The interior's been done up, keeping the dark wood, but with vividly coloured accent walls as well, and they've kept the separate areas around the bar. The Ship is friendly, comfortable and unpretentious and fits in well with its environment - in our opinion, this is how a local should be done. Editors Note: apparently scenes featuring Roy Kinnear and Tracy Hyde from the cult movie Melody (a.k.a. S.W.A.L.K) were filmed here in 1971 - one for the aficionados.

Re-opened about 4 weeks ago after fairly extensive refurbishment. Now under new ownership and management - owned by same people as the Doghouse just down the road. The pool table has gone (boo!) to make way for more seating and a little bar billiards table. Decor generally good, a few of the maritime bits and bobs have been retained but the shelving island in the bar has disappeared making the place more open. Only had a couple of swifties in here, decent ales on tap and the food menu looks good and not too dear (take note, Grand Union). Gone a little up-market from where it was before so still cheerful but not quite as cheap. Staff and landlady are friendly and chatty in my brief experience. The TV appears to have gone so probably not showing footy anymore.
