This pub is a big old rangy place that is very possibly the template for all those London pubs furnished with curios and knickknacks. Even without the toy carts and fruit bat display looming down over you, there's also a large old-master style fresco on the ceiling to take in, with some of the notable regulars forever immortalised in paint. Aside from the decoration this is still a very noteworthy pub with Thai food on offer, a beer garden for the summer and hardened winter smokers, four real ales and a piano in the corner for any impromptu sing-a-longs. There are also regular music nights and weekly you'll find a quiz and a comedy night. The Sir Richard Steele offers up a more traditional pub experience than the more loungey bars nearby, and its temperament, clientele and furnishings add up to one of North London's more idiosyncratic boozers.

I go here regularly, especially on a Friday afternoon which usually goes way into the night. Being a continental European, I always take my mates and visitors to this pub to show what an art the English can make of their pubs. This place is almost a museum, brilliant...

I go to the Sir Richard Steele on a regular basis, usually on a Saturday night. It is always a great experience.
There is a good choice of beer on offer (the Timothy Taylor Landlord bitter is excellent). On Saturdays they always have at least 4 or 5 staff behind the bar, so there is no wait to get served, even when the pub is at its busiest. I have never tried the Thai food, but it looks inviting. There is an occasional Comedy Club, plus a big but unobtrusive TV screen for sports watchers.
The customers are a buzzy, friendly lot, creating a great night out; lots of fashionable young people out to see and be seen, with the added bonus(?) of one or two local characters.
Definitely one of the best pubs in London - I wish I had found it years ago.

Chalk Farm: exit tube, turn left and then double back up Haverstock Hill. The pub is on your left hand side after about 5-10 mins walk Belsize Park: exit tube, turn left and walk down Haverstock Hill. The pub will be on your right after about 10 mins walk.
