This is a lovely locals pub on the edge of Putney Common and to be honest, is a bit of a trek away from the High Street. Maybe that's why it works, it's not trying to drag people away from the bright lights and bustle, it's just working hard to be a decent local for the community. Inside, the slightly eclectic interior suggests gastro, and the haggis fritters and seared ox-tongue on the menu when we were in last don't fight that description too hard. But, that aside, decent beer on the three taps (Doom Bar, Pride and Black Sheep on last visit) and plenty of space just to have a pint makes it the kind of gastro we'd rather go to - one with the option of eating, rather than making it a requirement. When they get it this right, we have to wonder how they could get it so wrong with their sister pub the Salisbury just across the river. We like this one, although the bull's head over the door to the toilets seemed to be looking at us... maybe that was just the drink.

From Barnes Station: Turn right out of the station into Rocks Lane and carry on until you reach Mill Hill Road. Turn right and carry on for about 10 minutes until you reach Lower Richmond Road - the pub is ahead on the right. From Putney Station: Turn right out of the station and take the first left at Norroy Road. Go to the end and turn right into Charwood Road, again going to the end. Turn Left into Hotham Road and carry on until you reach Erpingham Road and turn right. When you reach Lower Richmond Road, turn left and the pub is ahead on the next corner. From Putney Bridge: take the 22 or 265 bus from the station and get off at Putney Common. Alternately, head for Putney Bridge, cross it and then take the first right into Lower Richmond Road. You'll have to walk for a good 10-15 minutes and the pub is ahead on the left.
