Plans are afoot to regenerate the area around Barking station, which few would disagree with unless they have a strange fascination for 1960's concrete structures, but hopefully the Spotted Dog will not be a victim of the 21st century planners after surviving the previous round of improvements.' A rare venture into traditional pub territory for the Davy's chain, it provides an oasis just metres from the station exit. The extensive wine list shows its owners influence, while Victorian port and sherry barrels rather than alcopops caught our attention behind the bar. Shepherd Neame's Kent Best was among the ale options on our last visit. Outside space is provided in the so-called Country Courtyard' and getting a seat inside appears a much easier task than at the Weatherspoon's next door. Getting one of the couches isn't such an easy task.
