The Spread Eagle, Croydon
FancyaPint?'s review...
The Spread Eagle is part of the Fuller's Ale & Pie format, and was formerly a bank. In a town not exactly known for architectural splendour, it has one of the few grand settings you'll see. It's next to the impressive Croydon Clocktower, which houses a museum, a gallery, the central library and a pleasant café and is worth checking out in its own right. There's also large a statue of Queen Victoria next door. In terms of the beer, the Spread Eagle has pretty much the full Fuller's range and is one of the better town centre pubs. It has a large upstairs as well as a downstairs, and the downstairs is pleasant for watching live sport if you can get a seat (or better still, one of the leather settees) and what's more, it doesn't get too rowdy. There's a small outside area which is candlelit in the evenings, though it's otherwise rather unappealing unless the weather is bright, in which case it inevitably gets very crowded. Not the cheapest pub in town, but a safe, decent bet.
