We remember these premises from the heady days of the 1980s when they were a sort of disco-bar type establishment (there were dozens of them at that time). It's been through a few iterations since then, usually of the bar variety, but the latest incarnation - The Stone Horse Paper Cow - is one that's well and truly in the centred in the sights of our humble guide. Put simply, it's now an underground pub, but that description is both dismissive and unfair. The Stone Horse Paper Cow is actually a much better pub than many other places that have natural light and purpose-built architecture. You enter via an-easily missed doorway and once you've gone down a couple of flights of stairs, you'll find yourself in a room with a long bar - offering three ales on the hand pumps, plenty of lagers (and Grolsch Weizen) and a good selection wines, sprits etc. This area opens out into another, much larger room, furnished in the familiar shabby chic style with the added bonus of table footy, pool and a dart board for your entertainment. Add to that friendly service, cheapish but decent grub and a laid-back (for the City at least) atmosphere and you've got an excellent reason not to get the next train home. We need a few more places like this round here - well done.
