The Tommyfield (ex-White Hart), Kennington
FancyaPint?'s review...
Now reopened as The Tommyfield - the concept being (it seems) partly geared around fish and chips (Tommyfield Market in Oldham being the site of the first fish and chip shop) and the menu on the wall when we were in looked like they're pushing the boundaries of what you'll find in a chippy - soft shell crab fritter anyone? Having read Jay Rayner's review of the place in the Observer not too long ago, we had our apprehensions about what it would be like (we were picturing the Anchor & Hope in Waterloo, so we'll be forgiven, we're sure). We were proven wrong, as when we were in last there were only drinkers in and none of the tables had the obligatory lunch settings. The friendly and efficient staff quickly attended to our order and left us alone to drink in peace. Owned by the same people behind the Avalon in Balham, they're working hard to make it a place you want to go and we can't fault them for that. Obviously we could have eaten, but that wasn't the point. We're pleased with the result, as they've definitely managed the boundary between pub and restaurant, making it a pub that does what looks like great food. Now we'll just have to go back and try it! Only downside was the smell of drains in the bogs
