The Two Chairmen (ex-Nancy's, ex-Schrodingers), Piccadilly
FancyaPint?'s review...
After a few more name and identity changes, this old pub is finally back to its original (1683, apparently) name. Nothing to do with corporate board members, the name refers to the guys who used to carry somewhat richer people around in sedan chairs. This old pub has, as last, dropped the quirky and baffling identities over the last few years and been restored to something far more appropriate to its historic roots. Downstairs is a pleasant, panelled room, with a bar serving a couple of real ales on hand pumps - the almost ubiquitous pairing of Fuller's London Pride and Timothy Taylor's Landlord - as well as a a reasonable enough mix of lagers, beers and cider on tap and a short, but decent wine list. Food is, naturally, available with a range of traditional dishes just under the £10 mark - which is a pretty good pricing for the area, although it must be said the drink is a little pricey (only to be expected, given the pub's location) - you win some, you lose some, we guess. As the pub is just so slightly off the beaten track - yet still within sight of Trafalgar Square, you get fewer tourists and more local workers in here, which in our opinion, improves the atmosphere immensely. If you're looking for a spot to meet up in town, or rest your weary bones after seeing the sights of Whitehall, we feel the revitalised Two Chairmen is well worth seeking out. (new photo to come).
