Three Crowns, St. James
FancyaPint?'s review...
This cosy, back-street boozer cleverly pulls off the trick of acting like it's in a quiet part of town, while the reality is you can almost hear the buzz of Piccadilly Circus traffic from the bar. On our visit, we were delighted to see all four hand pumps in operation, serving Young's Best, Bombardier, London Pride and the increasingly popular Sharp's Doom Bar. Also on offer, were the usual keg suspects - Amstell/Fosters/Strongbow/John Smiths - a decent looking wine list and a fairly standard pub grub menu. The Three Crowns is helped by its size - quite small - and a layout that allows for couples, solo drinkers and larger, lunching groups to coexist without feeling like they are on top of one another. That said, where this pub really earns its stripes (or, in this case, pints) is with its staff. We were warmly welcomed, given an introduction to the beers, offered food, and generally made to feel important even on a busy-ish Friday lunchtime. Its position just behind the Apollo Cinema makes it just about perfect for a pre- or post-movie pint. (And now it's open on Saturdays.)
