Tollgate, Turnpike Lane
FancyaPint?'s review...
You would think from reading Fancyapint, that sometimes we have some issues with Wetherspoon pubs. Sadly when they keep running atrocious places, we will keep criticising them. Saying that, despite a less-than-salubrious location, the Tollgate isn't too bad. Sure, it suffers from all the usual Wetherspoon problems: sticky, uncleaned tables, transient atmosphere and dubious decoration but there are a number of factors in it's favour. Firstly service is pretty good - you feel as if you're dealing with real live human beings. It also one of the older style branch designs, and although in need of some TLC, there are booths and various nooks an crannies to hide yourself away. Although the front is populated, as usual, by the older all day drinkers, elsewhere found a surprisingly mixed clientèle, with a correspondingly friendly atmosphere. Add the cheapest ale within, well, the radius of the next Wetherspoon and you have a good drop to drink too. Its certainly not a destination venue, but it'll do for a pint or two.
