This place has been through more than a few incarnations in recent years. We've attended comedy nights here and as Progress it used to be more of a bar/club, offering post-match fizzy beer and fisticuffs to players from the nearby football pitches. It relaunched a couple of years ago as Tufnell's, where an attempt was made to turn it into a live music venue before changing to the Tufnell Park Tavern recently. We stopped by on the second day of opening and received a warm welcome from the staff, who had clearly been working all hours to get the place ready. It's a big old place, so perhaps not surprisingly the new owners have opted for a mixed use approach. The front bar, which used to be of the spit-and-sawdust variety 15 years ago, is now a light and airy coffee shop, open for breakfast. Behind it is a very shiny looking new kitchen, which produces some excellent Mediterranean food. A room at the back of the building is reserved for diners, but it's refreshing that a large amount of the available space functions as a pub. There are a couple of well-kept ales on tap, including Butcombe and Brakspears and the usual selection of everything else to enjoy. The large walled garden at the rear was welcome, especially as we'd timed our arrival to coincide with a rare afternoon of sunshine and clear blue skies. With only some of the space available in the building currently being used, it will be interesting to see how the pub develops. However, with not much competition in the immediate vicinity, it looks set to become a very good pub for the local community, one which should cater to most North London tastes.

I think 4 pints is over-egging it somewhat. It's a good, diverse place: great for families, serves a decent enough pint, always has plenty of space, inside and out, and serves really exceptional food. However, if you're after a boozer this isn't for you. The beer isn't quite right - with a generic, slightly tinny aftertaste whatever's in the cask - and the wide open spaces mean there's no lovely close pub atmosphere. Still, it serves the local community very well, particularly the families, and that's not to be sniffed at.

Great if you have a baby, even at 7:30 on a Friday evening. Less good if you feel a pub is a place for adult company. Staff really disinterested too. Avoid.

It's quite an experience to walk into a well populated pub, approach an empty bar.. then observe the barmaid (seeing our approach) SPRINT to the opposite side of the bar and twang the bell for last orders as we checked out the beers on offer. We were outside a bustling Big Red about 10 minutes earlier and decided to give this place a go, after seeing on this website that they had a 3am late licence on Saturdays. It was 11pm. So don't bother!
