Being painted in a garish black and orange colour scheme means the Urban Bar is the second building you'll notice on leaving Whitechapel tube station - the first is the Royal London, dead opposite the station - but we'll leave the environmental considerations to other authorities and concentrate on what you find inside. Mercifully, the pub's interior is nowhere near as strident - colourful, naturally, it feels like a cross between a café and trendy bar. However, a look along the bar itself shows a good ranges of decent beers on the hand pumps as well as the lagers, wines, shots and alcopops you'd expect of a place like this. There's a very cheap menu on offer - mostly around the £6 mark and the service is fine. Midweek the clientele is a curious mix of locals - not many of them in white coats and dressing gowns, but gets younger and trendier as we head towards the weekend. You wouldn't go out of your way to come here, but if you're hungry and thirsty after a hospital/market visit, it's not a bad bet.
