Victoria Stakes, Muswell Hill
FancyaPint?'s review...
As property prices in London increased at an exponential rate (until recently, at least), the trendy, credit rich, cash poor flat-sharers in their 20s and 30s were forced to more and more wayward locations in the search for a domicile. And it seems, not far behind these people will follow a gastropub. Formerly an average boozer in the middle of nowhere, the Victoria Stakes has been a "bar and dining rooms" with grand ideas for a couple of years now. It has little in the way of competition, so the refurb was fairly basic - it looks very similar to how it was before, save for a couple of couches and the pretty "garden restaurant". The bar menu is reasonably priced (burger £8) and restaurant prices are pegged in the early to mid teens, which is appropriate for such an aspirational place. A reasonable wine list also complements a nice enough selection of ales and continental lager. If you can't face the steep walk up to Muswell Hill proper, the Victoria Stakes might just fit the bill.

The Stakes is a very well run pub that respects its customers, looks after its beer and serves good food.
Go there and enjoy it; but avoid Sunday lunchtimes when it descends into a poorly run creche for spoilt Crouch End children, which run around screaming whilst their parents ignore both them and the impact they're having on other diners.
Otherwise, best pub for miles.
Let's have a return to child-free pubs!
