For a few years now The Victoria has been a good solid pub which has successfully straddled the line between being a traditional pub and a gastro-orientated place. Sadly a recent refurb has left us cold. The rich, dark interior, has been painted in an insipid pastel and the cost mix of armchairs and tables has been downgraded to something resembling a messy restaurant. Sadly, the overall cosy and inviting feel has entirely gone. We can't recall if the trivial pursuit questions are still on the tables as we were completely distracted by the scores of children screaming and running about. Sure, you can expect the odd child in a pub on a Sunday, but when they outnumber the adults, you know something is going wrong. You'll still find a couple of well-kept real ales and friendly service, but we'll have to return on a weekday evening to see if the atmosphere warms up once the kids have gone off to bed. Once one of our favourite watering holes in the area, we'll be sticking to the Prince of Wales from now on.

Your directions to this pub are insane. From Highgate tube walk north up Archway Road, turn left at Church St and then left again at the traffic lights with North Hill. Then very *slightly* uphill to The Victoria. Miss out all the barmy up & down mountaineering in this review. Or try looking at a map first. DUH!

How to find the Victoria pub

Rather sneakily, Highgate tube is a fair walk from Highgate Village, with a 15 minute walk in-between. Leave Highgate tube by the pedestrian exit, take a left and cross straight over the large junction onto Southwood Lane Take the second right onto Castle Yard which leads to North Road. Turn right and its on the right. Alternatively walk (or catch the bus) up Highgate Hill from Archway. At the top of the hill in the heart of the village, the pub is over the other side of the mini-roundabout a minutes walk down North Road on the right, past The Wrestlers pub. Phew.
