For a few years now The Victoria has been a good solid pub which has successfully straddled the line between being a traditional pub and a gastro-orientated place. Sadly a recent refurb has left us cold. The rich, dark interior, has been painted in an insipid pastel and the cost mix of armchairs and tables has been downgraded to something resembling a messy restaurant. Sadly, the overall cosy and inviting feel has entirely gone. We can't recall if the trivial pursuit questions are still on the tables as we were completely distracted by the scores of children screaming and running about. Sure, you can expect the odd child in a pub on a Sunday, but when they outnumber the adults, you know something is going wrong. You'll still find a couple of well-kept real ales and friendly service, but we'll have to return on a weekday evening to see if the atmosphere warms up once the kids have gone off to bed. Once one of our favourite watering holes in the area, we'll be sticking to the Prince of Wales from now on.

Angry! Actually, the route suggested is the one that most locals would take It's attractive, and has least traffic. 'The Park' is a short, curving road overhung with mature trees. It leads to a short, attractive, footpath also overhung with trees whose roots are partly exposed on a slope. There's a grass area against an old wall with flowers growing on it. You're then on North Hill, where it's a short walk to the Victoria. The route up Archway Road is beside one of London's major trunk routes, with all that implies for noise and heavy traffic.

On the Victoria, it's much appreciated by locals for its weekly song sessions around the piano on Sunday evenings. Participants are seriously good singers. Rowdy or out-of-tune this is not! There's also fortnightly jazz by the very long-established 'Victoria' jazz band.

Your directions to this pub are insane. From Highgate tube walk north up Archway Road, turn left at Church St and then left again at the traffic lights with North Hill. Then very *slightly* uphill to The Victoria. Miss out all the barmy up & down mountaineering in this review. Or try looking at a map first. DUH!
