Having recently replaced the distinctly below-average living room, the Wenlock & Essex was a welcome sight. Run by the people behind a number of fashionable north London bars, including the Slaughtered Lamb and the Diner (bizarrely just over the road) there is a distinct carousel/circus theme going on, with bright lights and colours all over the place, along with striking ruby red ceiling. We also liked the illuminated dance floor and the intimate leather booths along the walls. On the drinks front there are cocktails aplenty, complimented by a decent selection of both draft and bottled beers from the UK and beyond. Food also makes a showing with an interesting, decent selection of main meals and sandwiches which err towards traditional British. A late licence undoubtedly brings in the revellers on weekends and when things are handed well on a number of levels, who can blame them? Essex Road certainly isn't short of late night pubs and bars, but if you want one at livelier end of the scale this might fit the bill.
