The Windmill is a back street boozer which is torn between catering to locals from the nearby housing estates and the overflow of office workers, both of whom drink here at various times. Despite it's proximity to the Thames and the civil servant heavy Horseferry Road, this still looks and feels like an unreconstructed pub, notwithstanding the couple of Chesterfield couches. A mediocre selection of beer and a pretty depressing smoking area (at the back, go through the ladies toilet door) make this one of the less endearing pubs in the area. It's still a two pint pub, but not one we can see ourselves visiting much.

Several years ago I used to go to this pub from work (there were civil service offices nearby). At the time it had two bars, a Public and a Saloon. Now the interior has been ripped out and the only counter is to the right. Red leather sofas and interesting skylights at the back do not an appealing pub make. You can tell where the old counter was from the position of the food hoist. Apparently this act of public house vandalism was carried out about five years ago.

And when I visited all the pumps had been turned round - it seems to be a Greene King pub, which in itself is no commendation, but there was not even any of their beer available.

Sometimes you really can't go back.
