The Jolly Gardeners (or 'Zeitgeist @ the Jolly Gardeners' if you want to get technical) describes itself as London's first German pub. Whilst not strictly true, considering the German love of beer, it's surprising there aren't more places like this. Situated on the rundown Black Prince Road just south of the river, it's rather intimidating from the outside. High windows prevent you seeing in properly, while the black paint job makes it look a like a funeral parlour. Inside the black theme continues, with the modern bench seating perhaps slightly at odds with the last vestiges of this Victorian boozer. Still, as a German pub the most important thing is the beer, which doesn't disappoint. With both dark and wheat beers amongst the 16 selections, you'll find Bitburger, Paulaner, Erdinger and Warsteiner. While not groundbreaking if you've ever propped up a good bar in Berlin, the choice is still impressive by London standards and with all available at only 3 pounds on Mondays and until 5pm most other days there is sometimes a bargain to be found (all pints are pushing 4 quid the rest of the time). They also show German footy, which was proving popular with the ex-pats present. The food, as expected, was meat heavy, with plenty of sausages and meatloaf dishes to chose from.

I've just been there. Lousy almost hostile welcome and the staff were way to keen to keen to throw everyone out at 10.30 (on a Thursday night - turned off TV's that people were watching, stacking chairs around people that were sat at tables etc)! Staff were otherwise unwelcoming in the extreme (that's English for rude, obstructive and underserving of custom). I went because I've been studying German and thought it might be a great place to go after a hard evenings studying .... how wrong I was!

How to find the Zeitgeist @ The Jolly Gardeners pub

Despite being in Zone 1, its fair way for the tube. From Vauxhall, exit onto Albert Embankment, and after a few minutes take Black Prince Road, which is approx the 5th turning on the right. The pub is a couple of minutes down on the right.
