Located on Long Melford's picture postcard village green, the Black Lion has always been a bit of a funny one in our books. OK, it's an upmarket boutique hotel, first and foremost, but they have a bar and patio where it's possible to relax with a pint. We noticed that they only had Adnam's on pump (which made a welcome change from the ubiquitous Green Kings brews in the rest of Melford's huge choice of boozers) but this was well kept and very tasty. At cooler times we would imagine the inside of this place to be snug with a few large Chesterfields and other comfy chairs dotted about the place. As much as we'd like to concentrate on the positives here, the Black Lion is very straight-laced, not Melford's best choice for a drink and the overall staid atmosphere of the place isn't one that urged us to stay for another. Worth a look if you're in the area though.
