Masons Arms Hotel, Louth
It's hard to get more central than this pub, located on the market square in the heart of Louth. Having been taken over by new owners in the last few months, it's in the middle of being refurbished, probably losing some of its old charm and joining the 21st Century. While this will annoy some traditionalists, we had a thoroughly enjoyable time, good beer, decent pub grub and friendly locals made it well worth the effort. You could do far worse than this, and it's worth it just to sample the five ales on the taps; and in a nod to its heritage, they've got one on the pumps called 'Funny Handshake' - very refreshing on a sunny afternoon. Don't get us wrong, it's still pretty traditional, albeit with comfy sofas and more modern furnishings in the main bar. Apparently they're in the process of gutting the rooms upstairs, but should be offering accommodation again soon.
