Queen's Head, Maldon
FancyaPint?'s review...
The Queens Head is a large family friendly pub on the attractive River Blackwater in Maldon. Approaching from road it looks like a pretty Victorian pub and indeed the smaller bar that side of the pub is rather comfortable and traditional. Around the back however, where the swathe of outdoor seating is, you'll find a more modern bar and the main entrance. Here the interior looks pretty bland - rather like a bar on a cross-channel ferry, which seems somewhat apt. Still, the watery views from the large windows make up for it. There's a heavy emphasis on food and there were plenty of kiddies around, in what is a very family friendly area. Pleasing, then, that the grown-ups were catered for with a choice of six ales, some locally sourced. So, not an outstanding pub, but it's certainly competent in most ways and is fine for a stop-off pint or a bite of eat.

A great pub for a beer or cider in the summer - excellent selection of local ales. Recommended.
However I wouldn't recommend eating there. The food is extremely bland and poor quality, I think they mostly sell to people from out of town who are unlikely to go back so they don't worry if customers are unhappy. The waiting staff must be used to complaints as they just shrug and walk off, as you have to pay up front there isn't alot you can do! The landlord sits at the bar drinking and doesn't pay any attention to customers at all, even if there is a wait to be served, seems to resent the paying customer which is always a bad sign. Oh dear, this pub could and should be so much better.
