Castle Hotel, Manchester
Seemingly packed to the rafters whenever we show up, this is clearly not the impregnable fortress its name may suggest. For those able to shoehorn themselves through the Castle's door there is a fine pub to be found and certainly somewhere where you're going to get a lively atmosphere. The small front room takes most of the strain, with a compact snug hidden behind the bar and a thin room mainly used for gigs further along the corridor. Right at the back is a microscopic yard where smokers compete over a very limited supply of space and air. The only negatives are that it can get just the wrong side of busy and Robinsons beers have never really impressed our taste buds, but the bar staff are usually on the ball so at least waiting for a pint isn't too much of a problem. There's also late opening until the early hours for those who retain the stamina of their youth.
