Without doubt this has to be among the top 10 of pubs named the Crown and Kettle. Partly, as it may be the only one, and also because it is indeed a fine watering hole. Even if architecture rather than alcohol was your bag there would be plenty to appreciate in a building that seemingly was originally destined to be law courts. Luckily, much of the original interior, including the ornate ceiling, survived a fire and a long period of closure to be visible today. The pub is split into three areas, with a lounge, tap room and snug, which must be the prime spot during the colder months. There can be up to six ales available, though our last visit saw a couple less than this, along with several other beer options on tap and an interesting range of bottled options. We have even been treated to live jazz on a previous trip, which saw the pub busy, but not bursting at the seems.
