Ye Old Griffin Hotel is March's predominant attempt at a trendy venue. Part of the Barracuda Group's Smith & Jones brand, they usually specialise in bland and unexciting places to drink. In this case, it fares a little better than average. It's a large place, with a number of distinct areas, some of which have a dark loungey feel. There are a couple of session ales to complement the usual choice of lager, while food is offered throughout the day and reasonable prices. The presence of a hotel above probably encouraged them to make more of an effort with the decor and there are some lovely original features around the entrance. Despite attracting a younger crowd, the atmosphere was relaxed and people seemed to be generally behaving themselves.
