Market Harborough is a pretty market town, with a conspicuous lack of pretty public houses. One of the closest we spied, from the exterior, at least, was the Three Swans. This impression was sadly dispelled once we went inside. Our instant reaction to this rather clinical refurbishment was that it felt like a hotel bar - an impression which turned out to be correct when we realised there is a hotel and function rooms at the back. Still, there was an open (gas) fire, friendly enough service and a couple of ales in very good nick. The most off putting thing, however, was the bizarre atmosphere. Despite there being a couple of families present, complete with babies, you could hear a pin drop - or in this case, the sound of someone sending a text message on their phone. A couple of men sat in silence and watched the muted TV which was showing the football. So eerie and devoid of atmosphere was it that we didn't linger beyond our quick half and we're unlikely to return any time soon.
