An enormous village green, surrounded by Victorian cottages is quintessential England. And here, in deepest Essex, the heart of this community is represented by The Chequers, an attractive double fronted pub. So what greets you when you venture inside? Essentially, what looks like a pseudo Italian restaurant, festooned with those classy touches that went out of fashion some 20 years ago. Not the black gloss tables, or the black leather bench seating, nor the black and white diamond wallpaper sit well here. You certainly get the measure of a "country pub" pretty quickly when you find a giant Glitter ball hanging from the bar. This approach extends to the food: fish and chips on a square plate, with the chips piled jenga style. The food should speak for itself without the gimmicks. Anyway, having accidentally ventured beyond the bar into the eating section, we were made to feel like gatecrashers at a private party. The positives are scant - a couple of very well kept ales and lovely views from the beer garden. If we wanted an expensive and aspirational suburban restaurant we'd go to Loughton, while if we wanted a country pub we'd go elsewhere. Ultimately, the worst of both worlds.
